Fishing in Port Douglas with Akula Sportfishing – January 2025 Report

by: JASON 03 / 02 / 2025

Welcome to our January report. We certainly hope everyone had a terrific Christmas and New Year. Port Douglas fishing charters were in very high demand with Akula operating all except 3 days for the whole month, with two of those days due to weather and one day for scheduled engine servicing.

Overall we had amazing sea conditions for the most part, with glass out seas being common. Of course those glass out conditions do coincide generally with slow fishing, so we really had to work hard by covering a lot of ground.

When the bite was on, they were really on, and when they were off they really sulked. Sharks proved to pose a real problem out on the deeper ground and were responsible for taking nearly all fish hooked!

All northern fishermen are aware of this problem, especially in summer, and we are attending the shark depredation workshop hosted by Qld Fisheries in Townsville in late March so hopefully there are plans to implement to bring their numbers under control.

January also proved to be a month with many neap like tides through the daylight hours therefore making finding current run a challenge. No run, no fun. We had some epic sessions though, whereby esky and cooler bags were full of fish. If I were to make a suggestion, please know how you are going to deal with your catch BEFORE you want anything taken for you.

Port Douglas fishing will only get better moving forward now as the water temperature starts to cool slightly, and we look forward to telling you how it is soon.
