Fishing in Port Douglas with Akula Sportfishing – FEBRUARY 2025 Report

by: JASON 05 / 03 / 2025

Welcome to our February report. The month of February was very slow as a whole across all of Port Douglas. Once the Australia Day long weekend passed things got very quiet, and understandably many people thought Port Douglas was under water due to listening to main stream media who are more about embellishing a situation for a juicy headline than reporting the facts.

If in doubt, ring a local person!

Overall we had amazing sea conditions for the most part, with glass out seas being common. We did have an unusual period lasting over a week whereby the wind blew hard which is unseasonal for our part of the world that time of year.

The fishing days were only a handful throughout the month and on those days the ideal tides were occurring throughout the evening and night so we were missing the prime bite window. We had one session though whereby the favoured moon phase and tide occurred whilst we were on charter and it was on like Donkey Kong!

We actually ran out of space to store fish which was a combination of Large Mouth Nannygai, Crimson Snapper (small mouth) and a couple of Red Emperor thrown in. When the favourable tide changed, the bite came to a screaming halt.

Sharks were still remaining consistent as serial pests, and this situation is only going to keep getting worse unless something is done.

The water temperature was still a balmy 31/32 degrees, and we look forward to the temperature dropping to help stimulate fishing activity, and to help fire up some of the shallower grounds.

We still have not had any decent rain for the wet season so far (in and around Port Douglas) so the wonky holes having really fired as they should so we still have that to look forward to between now and the end of April! Fingers crossed.
