Welcome to our December report. December 2023 saw us suffer through the deluge from Cyclone Jasper which cut off the road from Cairns for six weeks, and this year saw glamour weather for all but a small handful of days.
As is the case up here in the far north of Queensland, glamour weather generally coincides with tough fishing conditions as the very calm and glass out weather generally coincides with gentle to light northerly winds, and fish on the Great Barrier Reef don’t bite enthusiastically on northerly winds. Water surface temperature is also hot at 31-32 degrees.
All fish of course, like us, have to eat sometime but the larger tides were predominantly through the evenings/night time which is when the major bite window was. Trying to find current run was also a challenge and the old saying is very true – “No run, no fun”.
Another challenge you can have in these very calm conditions is, believe it or not, drift fishing and anchoring. In these super calm conditions just about every drift course on the same ground is different, making it challenging when drifting over a small rock in 50/60/70 metres that you need to be bang on with. Anchoring poses the same problems where you can just mill about and not hang right on your mark.
Of course we caught quality fish, we always do, you just have to work hard.
Please look us up for your next Port Douglas Fishing Charter. See you again start of February.
