Fishing in Port Douglas with Akula Sportfishing
Welcome to our Port Douglas fishing charters August 2025 report. The traditional trade winds through the winter months in far north Queensland did their usual thing with 20 knots being the average most days. You have to try and be positive and the way I look at it these blustery offshore conditions are the natural protector of the Great Barrier Reef. Even though personally we strive to rotate our fishing ground around as much as possible regardless, it gives all fish stocks a break. We did enjoy some glorious windows allowing us to head further away than windy conditions allowed, and anglers that were on these fishing trips were rewarded accordingly with good catches of Nannygai, Coral Trout, Cobia, Sweetlip, Spanish Mackerel, plus many more!
We did have trips where the bite windows came and went quite quickly, and other trips where the bite was more consistent across the tide. Generally speaking, the demersal species tend to go a little sulky mid tide, and recently it has been mid flood tide, but these patterns can, and do alter, especially after each moon every two weeks.
Water temperature was 24 degrees thereabouts, and this has coincided with good numbers of Spanish Mackerel being present. Over Spring, as the water temperature rises further, we will invariably notice species like Nannygai and Red Emperor start migrating to the deeper water.
Our Spring and Summer months provide us with the best overall offshore conditions with calmer seas to many glass outs, so don’t say “one day”, get yourself up here and get amongst it!
